1970's roller skating fad?

Was there a certian style of clothing that everyone wore back in the 1970's while they roller skated? I'm thinking short shorts and tube socks but I want a picker to make sure I'm correct.

I want to try roller skating, any tips for beginners?
dont be afraid to fall down. you will fall down, at first. just be careful not to hurt your wrists and ankles.

when you start, just act like you're walking in them. you'll get it.

Can you lose a lot of weight roller skating?

I used to love roller skating and I am getting back into it. I haven't been since I was in middle school and now I'm 26. I was wondering if you can lose a significant amount of weight if you go roller skating often. I will be going 3 days a week for 2 hours at a time. Anybody seen weight loss results from roller skating?

Can you lose a lot of weight roller skating?
yes u can because thats excise and the leg and stuff get the excise so i feel u can
Reply:It is an active sport , It is a cardio vascular stimulant. How can it not help to loose weight.? Four days a week would be beter though. Most weight loss regimes try to go for 4 days a week with a rest day in between.
Reply:As long as you can do it with out a bag of fries in one hand and a double whopper in the other.
Reply:i know you can burn a lot of calories by ice skating. but i think you can lose weight too by roller skating
Reply:You can loose a little but mainly tone up. It will be very good for your heart and muscle tone.
Reply:roller skating is not bad exersize. If you want to loose a significant amount of weight, I would take up swimming or jogging for 20 mins per day.

Hope this helps
Reply:idk...i know that you burn like a lot of calories and stuff.

Which is better? Roller Skating or Bowling? and why?

Can you help me out because my friend think bolwing is better than roller stating and i say Roller skating.

Which is better? Roller Skating or Bowling? and why?
I think that bowling is better because it is fun and you don't have to be very coordinated to bowl.
Reply:I love both....so I guess it's a matter of personal preference.
Reply:Bowling definitely. Roller skating/ roller blading in a rink angers me because there is so little room to skate in, but it is good because the rink is nice and smooth, unlike sidewalks and roads. But I would rather bowl because I am better at it, so I say it depends on what you feel like doing and your personal preference.
Reply:Roller skating is better exercise. As for "better" if you mean which is more fun, that is personal choice.
Reply:Roller skating can give you a cardio workout, so it's better for that reason. Plus, you'll be less likely to suffer tendonitis in your wrists and elbows if you don't bowl.
Reply:i'd prefer bowling because people arent always in your way. But skating is also fun with family your choice
Reply:Bowling (i dont know how to skate) :)
Reply:Skating is so much more fun. In bowling (If you are bowling with someone) you have to wait forever for your turn...so I can't stand it. Besides, rollerskates can help you get places faster so they can help you be productive, what does a stupid bowling ball do unless you want to hit someone with it.

Are the Roller Derby QE-747 inline skates any good? Are they comforatable and fast?

I don't have experiance with them but am going from on-line descriptions.

The 747s look like reasonably good recreational skates. They have a good frame and reasonably sized wheels (Labeda is a good wheel brand).

If you want speed, you might also want to compare the Roller Derby Lamond skates (link below). If you compare the two skates you will notice that the Lamond has 90mm wheels instead of 80 (roll easier and faster, more stable at speed) and the boot is cut shorter (the faster you want to go, the shorter the boot gets for flexibility). The web site says "racing" but they would be more commonly called "fitness" skates. 4x90 is becomming a common fitness arangement.

If you are new to inline skates, the fitness skates may be a little less supportive and a little harder to turn/stop at first than the recreational skate but is reasonable to learn on. I would NOT recommend racing skates for a complete beginner.

I have given you some online links but seriously recommend buying them locally if possible. Fit and Comfort depend a lot on the shape of your feet. Many companies have a different fit on their rec and fitness skates with the fitness skate being a closer fit to the foot for the same size.

You want the skate to fit snug all around the foot without pinching on the ends of the toes. Then the skate can act as an extension of your feet.

If you are a beginner, don't forget to get a helmet and wrist guards. Those are the two most critical pads from the likelyhood and seriousness of pain and injury when you fall (it will happen, especially if you want to go fast).

A standard bicycle helmet will work. Like the skates, you want the smallest one that fits. Anything larger will allow it to rotate if you hit your head (not good).

Knee and elbow pads depend more on your comfort level. Knees are also likely to get scraped up when you fall.

Why isn't Roller Skating in the Olympics?

Roller Skating has skate dancing, figures, free style, speed, and hockey.

Why isn't Roller Skating in the Olympics?
To qualify as a sport in the Olympics, it would need to be a sport that is commonly done and competed in my so many of the Olympic countries.

Rollerskating isn't all that popular in most of the world, replaced mostly by roller-blading and other extreme sports.

After reachinbg popularity, it must be voted on by the members of the Int'l Olympiv Committee.
Reply:Actually, rollerskating is popular in other places in the world. It is a very competitive sport. When I used to roller skate the coaches would send things around trying to get rollerskating in the Olympics. Report It

Reply:Um, you mean Manhattan, or like, the whole NYC?

A nice rollerskating rink just opened on Staten Island, it's called Rollerjam. It has that late 70's feel.

Of course, you probably meant Manhattan (no-help for you there)
Reply:you can find anything in NEW YORK CITY. if you wanted to skate on the ceiling you could problely find that to.
Reply:there are lots of places to go ice skating

there is one in rockefeller

one at chelsea piers

and the trump wollman rink right in central park 1 block away from columbus circle aka 59th street

i would recommend the wollman rink because it is cheap, the wait isnt ridiculously long like rockefeller, and rockefeller is also crowded, and a hassle, chelsea piers is hard to access unless you have a car because you have to find a way to cross the westside highway

the wollman is the way to go its cheap, large, outdoors, no long lines, and one block away from the train station, and is right in central park go soon because they close in mid april

The Roller Skate Key?

I had a scavenger hunt at my high school, and one of the items on the list was a roller skate key. I went down to the local antique shop, and I bought one for $2. First, I've become interested in the subject and was wondering about how much of an antique it very well may become. (Not that I'd sell it.) And Second, I was wondering about how I could renew it. You know, remove the rust.

The Roller Skate Key?
rustolium should help, any ace hardware etc.
Reply:I did a brief search on the web for roller skate key collecting, but could not find anything.

I watch The Antiques Roadshow on PBS. Often times someone will bring in an old item that they have cleaned and polished. It turns out that the cleaning decreases the value. Collectors seem to like the "old" look.

Until you find out for sure, I would just put it away for now.
Reply:They will only go up in value. Hang it on the wall and be proud of what you got.
Reply:The old roller skates had a key to tighten how they fit on your shoe. They can't be worth that much since those roller skates were only sold for children. They were made of a mix of aluminum or tin. I imagine a Brillo pad would clean them up. These skates were around in the 60's but were common even in the thirties. When skate boards became popular roller skates died out. Most roller skates had shoes and were designed for skating rinks. These were the toys of the boomer generation. The next generation came back with blade skates and skateboards that you could actually ride in the streets. The rest is history.

Any roller skate shops in or around Pittsburgh pa?
I can't help you directly but can give you a couple links.

The Three Rivers Inline Club (www.skatepittsburgh.com/) is primarily an inline skate club but they love skating and may know some good sources for quad skates.

The Steel City Derby Demons (www.steelcityderbydemons.com/) is a Roller Derby league. Roller Derby people skate on quad skates. Their web site has a links page. I had a hard time reading the ugly colors on it but could see that it did have a listing of local rinks, which tend to also sell skates.

If there isn't a specific skate shop listed there, I would send an email to the league and ask the question of them. These are people who skate a lot and will know who is knowledgable locally.

Laces Roller Skating Rink in Long Island closed?

I gew up in New York City and went to Long Island to go Roller Skating with family up there and the place was called Laces and was a huge roller rink. I was just wondering if anyone knows about it or if it closed, planning on taking a trip soon and would like to see it if it is and I can't find it on the internet.

Laces Roller Skating Rink in Long Island closed?
Where exactly was it? Not sure why, but I'm thinking Hillside Avenue around Herricks Road in New Hyde Park?

If that's the place, it's now an ice rink called Iceland:

http://www.icelandli.com/

Add a detail if that's not the place, but I do think it is.

EDIT: Then that's the place. I remember talking about it once, and know for a 100% fact that Iceland was once a roller rink. Therefore, I'm nearly 100% certain that this was the place. The only other roller rink I can think of in the area is "Hot Skates," but that's somewhere else, and certainly not on Hillside.

Further area description: across the street, there's a small movie theater, and Herrill Lanes bowling alley. There's a strip mall across Herricks Road. Down the block, a Jewish center. Sound familiar?

So, you can still visit Laces, but just make sure to have blades instead of wheels :-)
Reply:I grew up only blocks away from Laces. So this was a HUGE part of my young life. Going there as a 13-14 year old and looking for girls is vividly etched in my mind. Yes. It is now Iceland and has been for at least 15 years. Report It

I lived in Queens and it was the best thing in the world when you got a birthday party invitation and it was at Laces. And all the girls got sweatpants that said "Capricorn" on them with iron on lightning bolts.

Those were the days!

Ice skating or roller skating??

Which is EASIER? I don't care what you like better, just which one is easier. Only answers from people that have done both please! I just went roller skating a week ago and lets just say...I still have the bruises. I'm not that great. I'm going Ice skating today and just wanted to know which is easier... Thanks!

Ice skating or roller skating??
i think roller skating is harder to get used to and when you fall you fall harder
Reply:I think it really depends on the person. I have tried both and I have found ice skating way easier. I have tried both roller skating and roller blading and I spend most of the time on the ground or clinging to a wall. On the other hand my best friend can roller blade and roller skate all around town, but she can't ice skate at all. And then there are those people who can do both without any problems. I guess it just depends on who you are. Good luck ice skating. (Bend your knees it will help your skating a lot).
Reply:hmm depends on the person but i think roller blading i've done both but both can be very hard for a person or so so. i tried ice skating for couple years and didn't experience roller blading till two years ago my uncle is a professional roller blader racer and he says if you've tried rollerblading and practice it makes it alittle easier to learn ice skating i feel rollerblading was easier because of the wheels but no doubt ice skating and roller blading are FUN!!
Reply:I honestly think the level of difficultly depends on the person,,,

I've roller skated since i was little and am really good at it and I have no problem with ice skating... but I know that many of my friends who can ice skate say roller skating is too hard... so you'll really just have to try it out and see... good luck though and have fun!!!

(and i hope you keep trying with the roller skating! yes you'll fall and it's going to hurt but once you get better at it, you'll have lots and lots of fun doing it!!!)
Reply:Ok... in my city there's an ice skating rink and there's too a little kind of roller skating rink. I've been on both of them. I practice ice skating. I think the easier sport is roller skating 'cause there's more balance on the wheels. But, many times, you can't compare them 'cause as i said, on roller skating there's more balance on the wheels but in the ice skating when you fall on the ice maybe the "injures" are not gonna hurt you so much or as on the roller skating.

Good luck!!
Reply:i hav dun both of dees sports and i think both are easy but

ice skating is EASIER!!!

and do whatever u want girl!

: )
Reply:I've done both and I would say ice skating is easiest out of the two as the skates only go anywhere if you actually make them and if you just stand still the blades dig in to the ice and hold you in place. With roller skates they seem to have a mind of their own and will set off before you are ready. I fell down much more roller skating then I ever have on ice.
Reply:I would say that roller blading is easier. The skates are far more comfortable.

Can roller skating cause a sore neck?

I went roller skating and now I have a sore neck. My sister does not believe that roller skating caused my sore neck. I tend to disagree with her because that is the only thing that I did differently in my normal routine. What say ye?

Can roller skating cause a sore neck?
sure...if you were tensing up the muscles in your neck/shoulders...maybe in an attempt to concentrate/keep your balance.
Reply:Did you fall?
Reply:I don't think it was the roller skating, but the way you were moving your upper body as you were skating.
Reply:It's possible, especially if you fell a couple of times.
Reply:yes, your nerve endings in your back connect to your neck, you bend over and that causes strain. that goes through your neck and into your brain.

Ice skating rink or roller skating rink?

i know this is a weird question and sorry that its weird but do you think black girls would be more likely to go to a ice skating rink to hang out and skate or a roller skating rink to hang out and skate? please answer need your opinion thanks♥

Ice skating rink or roller skating rink?
As an African-American woman, I really don't see the difference at all. I love being inside both an Ice Skating Rink and a Roller Skating Rink; if only I learned how to both ice skate and roller skate.
Reply:Hi,

If the you or the black girls you're thinking about are teens, I'd say a roller skating rink just from what I know and seen at roller rinks around the country. I've never hung out in an ice skating rink so I don't know what kind of music they play there. All the roller skating rinks I've been to in California, Nevada, Arkansas and Colorado all have DJs that cater to pre-teens and teens. The floor is packed with girls and boys of all colors skating and dancing. Can people even jam skate on ice skates?
Reply:Hmmm, just an observation........I frequent ice rinks and we actually have a roller skating rink in our city. I think it's about even. I haven't seen a lot at either. A few, but not a lot. Sorry!
Reply:I don't think it makes any difference. I don't rollerskate much but I used to and now I just ice skate and I don't recall seeing more/less "black girls" at either.

Isn't this question a bit racist anyway?

Is roller skating safe while pregnant?

I'm overweight and recently picked up my favorite childhood sport of roller skating, Which I really enjoy. I skate with my husband and son 5-6 days a week 1-4 hours each time. is it safe now that I'm pregnant?

Is roller skating safe while pregnant?
you should consult a doctor for something this important. iam sure that the term and your medical condition are major factors. personal opinion...knowing that one accident or fall could cost your baby his/her life, is it really worth it ?
Reply:yes its very safe and is good for you also but just be very very carefull around where you skate and make sure you dont fall foward as im sure you already know...
Reply:you should put your skates away for the duration of your pregnancy and keep your feet firmly planted on the ground. accidents can happen, and one really bad fall is all it takes to jeopardize your pregnancy. you should also look into more baby-friendly exersizes, like walking and yoga.
Reply:Probably not, unless you want to fall and loose the child.
Reply:of course not, i recomend practicing yoga during your pregnancy
Reply:if you don't fall it should be ok

Roller Skating?

How good of an exercise is it?

What's a way that I could get my arms exercised too while roller skating?

and if you want:

What are other exercises that are as simple as roller skating but good work outs?

Roller Skating?
If you want a good all-round exercise activity, and you want to skate, pick up hockey. Roller (inline) hockey would be easier to learn, but ice works too.

If you can Ice Skate and Roller Blade, then Roller Skating shouldn't be a problem for you since you already know how to balance youself!

Hope that helped.
Reply:I don't think that any type of skating is "EASY." If skating was easy - everyone would do it! ;)

It may be less difficult for some people, but as with everything - if you want to get good at it, you must work at it. Each time you do it, it will get easier.

If you work at it - you can do it!

Roller Skating?

When you roller skate shouldn't you skate on smooth path like a sidewalk because I'm learning how to skate and the place I skate at has rough paths.

Roller Skating?
yes however the best place would be skating ring as it has wood floors which is the smoothest and railings to hold on while you're learning.

Artistic roller skating experts from 60' - 70's?

I know that I'm right but I need some support. I have always called jumps by their correct name. I am trying to point out the following in a skating forum.

Assuming that a skater is jumping in a counter clockwise direction:

a outside loop takes off from the right outside back edge and lands on the right foot and a back outside edge. When assisted by the free leg it becomes a mapes in roller skating.

A walley takes off from the right foot inside back edge and lands the the right foot on and back outside edge. When assisted by the free leg it becomes a toe walley. It is also called a toe walley in ice skating.

The loop comes from loops in figures wit a a jump in the middle.

An inside back loop takes off the left inside back edge and lands on the left inside back edge. It is like doing a salchow but landing on the left inside back edge. When assisted by the right free leg it becomes a toe loop. It is like a flip landing on the left inside back edge.

Artistic roller skating experts from 60' - 70's?
I rollerskated long ago but do not claim to be an expert! All of what you described are the same for ice skating . . . I compared it to the descriptions on this current site:

The Federation of Artistic Roller Skating

http://www.fars.co.uk/technical/tests/fr...

Loop - Yes

Take off backward outside to back outside on same foot

Mapes (out here we call it toe loop, though it was invented by Mapes). Yes, the free leg does go back to toe assist.

Take off back outside with toe to back outside on same foot

Walley - Yes

Take off back inside to back outside on same foot

Toe Walley - Yes

Take off back inside with toe to back outside on same foot

The loop name does stem from compulsary figures, but the jump is credited to its "inventor" Werner Rittberger.

I'm not sure what an inside back loop is . . . all I could think of is our "half loop" where it is landed on a back inside edge of the leg opposite of the normal landing leg . . .but even that we enter it like a loop on a back outside edge. Then there is a one-foot waltz or one-foot salchow that I've done for fun (but I don't think it's in any skating glossary) with that back inside edge landing. Otherwise, all other jumps land on the back outside edge. Toe loops are launched off a back outside edge with a toe assist, flips are launched off of a back inside edge with a toe assist - but both land on a back outside edge. Oh,I have heard of flips being called a toe salchow. I hope someone else can help you with that one!

Inside back loop as far as "figures" go - not the jump

Reply:Whether or not you believe this story below, I think Jesus would love roller skating for everyone, and probably would have loved to try it himself.

Enjoy:

"...It so happened that just at this time the annual competitive games and public demonstrations of physical prowess between the Greek cities of the Decapolis were in progress at the Scythopolis amphitheater, and Jesus was insistent that his father take him to see the games, and he was so insistent that Joseph hesitated to deny him. The boy was thrilled with the games and entered most heartily into the spirit of the demonstrations of physical development and athletic skill. Joseph was inexpressibly shocked to observe his son's enthusiasm as he beheld these exhibitions of "heathen" vaingloriousness. After the games were finished,

Joseph received the surprise of his life when he heard Jesus express his approval of them and suggest that it would be good for the young men of Nazareth if they could be thus benefited by wholesome outdoor physical activities. Joseph talked earnestly and long with Jesus concerning the evil nature of such practices, but he well knew that the lad was unconvinced. ..."

Reply:It is recreation, so why not? Just remember Rammy's signature song, "You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd." I have never argued with her logic, but now that I think about it, why assume that it would be any more difficult than walking on water?
Reply:I saw the world premiere of the full-length "Thriller" video one time when I went skating with my friends. They put a big screen in the middle of the rink, which was very upsetting to some of the die-hard, fancy-wheeled skaters. I certainly didn't get my two-toned jeans in a knot about it.

Which needs less force to be moved? A roller skate on its side or a roller skate on its wheels?

I need to help making a procedure showing which one is true. Can anyone help? My items that need to be used are:

2 roller skates

2 rubber bands, same size

1 yardstick

I'd really appreciate any help I can get!! Thanks! :)

Which needs less force to be moved? A roller skate on its side or a roller skate on its wheels?
attach bands to skates, pull band until skate moves , measure length of band when pulling - longer band more force
Reply:What this is a no brain-er. The one on it's wheels has less friction and will move easily, where as the one on it's side has a lot of drag.

How do i clean my roller skate wheels?

I have light colored wheels so they get really dirty. They are not inline or roller blades. they're quad skates. They have a lot of dirt ect.

What is the best/easiest/cheapest way to clean them.

thanks

How do i clean my roller skate wheels?
Dusting and cleaning

When was the last time you removed every wheel and wiped down the bearings? It's important to keep away the grime that cakes onto the outside of your bearings. Wipe with a slightly damp cloth and, if necessary, gently dig out the dirt.

If your wheels have a pronounced shaved-off look on the inside edges, it's time to flip them over and swap the position of the most worn wheels with the least worn. Are your 78mm wheels now 68s? You know it's time for new wheels when you can barely read the writing on the sides (or when there are no sides at all!)

How do change ball bearings on roller skate wheels?

I'm converting my old rink quad skates to outdoor roller skates.

How do change ball bearings on roller skate wheels?
instead of changing the ball bearings, it would be more effective and convenient to change the whole bearing. abec 5's are good bearings, and i would recommend them. to change the bearings, unbolt the wheels, and pop the bearings out, stick the new ones in, and bolt the wheels back on.

Artisitc (high cut) or speed (low cut) roller skate?

What is the difference between the two. I tried looking it up on the internet, and I was surprisingly disappointed with the little amount of information I was looking for.

I was thinking about the high cut boot because it looks like it would provide more ankle support and I heard it is great for manueverability and spins.

But my friend (who moved away) had speed skates and she was looking into jamskating aswell (however she was also in roller derby which might have affected her judgement on which skates to get). They looked cool and a lot of people have them at the rink.

What I'm planning to do with them is just skate for fun, nothing serious, and maybe dabble in some jam skating. So, what do you prefer? And *why*? Also, why do they call high cut boots, "artistic"?

Artisitc (high cut) or speed (low cut) roller skate?
Hey there,

There are several differences, here are the main ones:

1) Tall boots typically have a higher heel than low-cut boots (unless you get custom heels) - this means that your balance will be more "forward" with a tall-boot (i.e. the boot will force you to lean forward more, which can be good). Low boots give you a flatter base, making your centre of mass more towards the back. The advantage of a low heel is that you can get more power out of your stride in certain circumstances.

2) Most recreational tall boots are made of reasonably thin vinyl, leather or suede. They are not rigid like most figure skate boots. Most of the recreational-grade LOW boots are a padded synthetic/vinyl. It is not really true that a tall boot gives more ankle support - yes, you will have the feeling of something around your ankle, and with the laces, you can "hold" the ankle a bit, but a low boot is often more rigid and in some ways offers more support.

3) Tall boots are not all "Artistic" boots - if you get an artistic tall boot, it is a more rigid (and usually more expensive) version of a recreational one. This allows for tighter manuevering and dancing - precision.

At the end of the day, for recreational skating, it's really all about aesthetics, fit and comfort - it doesn't really matter which one you choose. Your wheels will make a much bigger difference in terms of the appropriateness for your skates for what you plan to do with them.

In roller skating, what is a figure 4 fall/slide?

I'm trying out for roller derby and got adivce that I should learn how to do a "figure 4" fall/slide (or baseball slide). Does anyone know what that is and how to do it on skates?

Also, if you know how to do an "all 4" fall/slide, some directions would be great.

In roller skating, what is a figure 4 fall/slide?
It's a fall where you mimic sliding into a base (like in softball) when the ball is close and you don't want to get tagged out. Your legs basically form a figure 4 in the slide. When you get ready to fall, just tuck one of your feet up behind the other knee and slide down on the outstretched foot.

Will roller skating give me slim legs??

I want to tone and slim my legs for the summer and was thinking about buying roller skates cos think this would be fun!! Would i need to go really fast to make a difference and for how long a day?? Don't want to build up muscle too much...this just make them look bigger!! Thanks xx

Will roller skating give me slim legs??
It depends on you body type and build as well as metabolism. Some people's legs will slim down quickly, some won't and some like myself will likely tone and build muscle but look significantly thinner.
Reply:Well,, not only will it slim down ur legs a bitt, but it will also give you a little bit of leg muscle. but not too to much
Reply:i think they will tone ur leg muscles more then anything but give it a world
Reply:you will get some muscles in them
Reply:no it will not slim ypur legs as asked .however it will give muscle tone.
Reply:I think so, but everything in moderation.

Hope this helped!

But you will also build muscle.
Reply:roller skating will generally build muscle in your legs.

and will tone and slim them.
Reply:I do it and they look great!!! I think you should go for it. I also think it is very good exersise so you get a workout too. I luv 2 sk8. I don't think it can make NE 1s leggs bigger muscle wise. Go 4 it!!! Hope I helped!!!
Reply:i think so
Reply:I'd say so. The roller skating girls that work at sonic seem to be in good shape. well, at least around where I live.
Reply:yes
Reply:Yes, your using mostly leg muscles to push your self.

I felt it in my inner thigh the most when I skate as a little boy.
Reply:No i an a roller stater and it makes ur legges bigger because ur leggs will grow more muscle like mine. I think u should run on a tread mill or just run
Reply:you would lose weight and burn calories etc. but you can't spot lose weight it all comes off slowly from everywhere but it could give u more leg muscle
Reply:butt- if you lay on ur stomach and squeeze your butt and lift ur legs and it'll tone ur butt
Reply:I would think so.
Reply:I don't think that roller skating would be the best way to slim your legs. Try work outs to burn the fat. Your legs would not become to "bulky" like a man's legs, but your legs would be much stronger. But if you want to have fun while exercising, do it with your friends at a gym.
Reply:Yes, the skating would tone your leg muscle and burn calories, which of course would cause you to lose weight. I wouldn't push it in time or speed when you start out, maybe 30-45 minutes at a comfortable pace. The longer you skate the more calories you burn, so you don't need to go too fast. The faster you go the more muscle you will build. Go for longer periods of time at comfortable speeds.
Reply:Skating would be a good way to get in shape. It will tone you up. Then start to build muscle. Stop when you start getting too thick.
Reply:NO, TRY DOING LEG WORK OUTS WITH WEIGHTS, YOU WILL LOSE FAT AND TONE THEM UP REAL SEXY
Reply:yeah i really think it would help and olny about 1 hour a day maybe
Reply:yeah it would help!

maybe going up little hills and building it up?

going fast could help you!

GOOD LUCK!!!

:D
Reply:Yes, it might, but it can also make them more muscular. Roller skating is a great exercise for burning calories though.
Reply:yes very, it work your muscles and slims out your legs %26amp; makes them very healthy
Reply:I not sure if roller skating will help but things like swimming and biking do for sure trust me iv'e been there and not to brag i look hot so probably you would just have to keep up your sport ( in your case ) roller bladeing. Just practice your sport every day! Good Luck:)

Does anybody still roller-skate?

I love roller skating outdoors at the park. Just wondering if anybody still roller-skates. It's so fun!

Does anybody still roller-skate?
Yes as a matter of fact they do. There is an organization called USARS for competitions and such for all roller sports in the US and there is an International ars as well that holds world competitions. Is roller skating popular?

when i was walking down the street two years ago, at least 3 kids would pass me on roller skates. Now, i rarely see people with skates on. Give me your opinion

Is roller skating popular?
When you say "roller skating", I am assuming you mean inline skating (because you mentioned only 2 years ago) and not quad skating ("my" generation would associate roller skating with the quad skates). Even at 10 years ago quad skates would not be have been popular on the streets.

I don't know for a fact that inline skating is less popular - though it is possible. It could depend on where you are. There are still inline skaters where I live . . . though, you are right, not as many . . . but the beaches and parks here are still filled with recreational skaters.

Perhaps there are several reasons why it is less popular - IF it is indeed getting less popular:

Parents are really up on safety these days. Inline skating has its potential hazards and parents are being more cautious about what they allow their kids to do. (Many families are without health insurance these days too . . . . .).

Aggressive skating has become popular . . . again, some parents may not want their kids skating thinking it may lead to that. On that note, these skaters can be found at a skate park or in a particular area for doing their tricks . . . not so much just taking a stroll through the neighborhood!

Other wheeled products have come onto the market: scooters, cool skateboards, skate shoes - other fads. Next? Not to mention those for sedentary activities like video games and such . . . you don't see as many children playing outside these days, sadly.

It's sometimes inconvenient to put the skates plus the safety gear on and off - you can't really enter anywhere. How many places do you see now that do not allow skating? With a scooter, skateboard, or skate shoes, you still have your shoes on and it's just a matter of tucking away your equipment.

Anyway, just some of my thoughts.
Reply:Depends on where you live at. Ask around.
Reply:Yes,I remember the kids would be out rollerskating, but then it was the scooter thing and now I hardly see any children out. I am thinking they have the tv and electronic game systems....I wish they would come out for some fresh air, summer is coming to an end very rapidly.
Reply:roller skating is still popular, expecially by the beach, and at roller rinks. but as time passes by, more ppl, unfortunately like me, spend more time inside than outside, like on the computer or tv. sad...
Reply:It's sort of like Razor scooters - the fad has died down. Everyone still has them in the garage, but they don't use them as much.

Using skates as a method of transportation has always been a problem because you needed to carry shoes/sneakers with you to change into once you got where you were going.

Heelies and Shoeskates alleviated that obstacle because you could (sort of) walk in them. Unfortunately, some wearers couldn't control themselves, especially in smooth-floored places and they annoyed people. Now when you walk into stores or the Mall, there are signs and security guards that prohibit skates and heelies. Many people pop out their wheels when they get places and use the Heelies as sneakers for this reason.

I've seen a lot of growth in roller skating RINKS and skate parks. Many skaters have stopped skating in front of their houses/schools and started using those places for skating. The indoor skaters don't want to wear down their wheels on concrete, so they stopped skating outdoors entirely.

The trick skaters (and skateboarders) try to not annoy people, so they stick to out-of-the way parks and parking lots. (So no one calls the cops to complain.)

In some ways, this has affected skateboarders as well; the parks with grind rails and ramps are more fun than the plywood jump ramp in the parking lot of the KFC that falls down when you get to the top. LOL
Reply:That's because they pretty much died alongside the eighties. Kind of unfortunate though, they were pretty fun.
Reply:right now skateboarding is most popular. I love skateboarding
Reply:Wow! I'm not certain how old you are or where you're from, but roller skating has come back with a vengeance! Old school roller skating (ie on quad skates, two wheels in front, two wheels in back) is becoming more popular than before. You may not see too many skaters in the streets, but they are packing the roller rinks. With the resurgence of roller derby, more and more people are dusting off their quads and heading to the rink. Also with recent movies like ATL and Roll Bounce, many people are "jam skating" again, which takes great skill and balance and is really cool to watch. Do an search online for roller skating, roller derby, and/or jam skating. You will be amazed at what you find! Blue Mayhem H4, Alamo City Roller Girls

How to do roller skating !! i lose my balance as wheels are on 1 side.?
Skating is easy and fun once you get the hang of it....Stand with your back against the wall when you have your skates - push off and do your very best to stand straight up... I do great on blades but not skates - it's different for everyone so make sure your using whats most comfortable for you - don't concentrate on name brand until you learn the technique... Stopping isn't very easy so once you get a small rhythm going, make sure to practice stopping.... You can take lessons at any skating rink. Good luck %26amp; have fun.
Reply:well rollerblading is hard trust me and if u keep on trying then try mre well try to get someone to help u who already has experience or like a big bro or sis or make a line with rop or something and try holdin it and rollerblading at the same time that's the best i can tell u and if u fall alot REMEMBER TO WEAR UR HELMET!
Reply:LOL......just go out and keep tryin and u will get better
Reply:what you need to do is keep both feet on floor and do the " V" thing with one foot at a time and keep your arms out when doing this .
Reply:i guess it came easy to me as a former figure skater, but i think if you're brave enough you could try ice skating, too. it might help you to learn to rollerblade. if not then just keep practicing. practice on tennis courts, if you can. they're a LITTLE softer yet they are also more slippery. yes use a helmet and maybe wrist gaurds

have fun, too!!!
Reply:I think you mean roller blading? If so, yes an acute angle, just like ice skating. Practice makes perfect, just skate as much as you can and you will eventually become comfortable.

How can i learn to roller skate fast?

I buyed new silicone roller skates.I know how to roller skate but on these skates i can't skate.i want to know any tricks on how to learn to skate.

How can i learn to roller skate fast?
Are they quads/inlines?

Generally, bend your knees and try to stride to the side instead of "kicking" behind you.

Reply:when your are skatering lean over and its makes you go faster i dont know how but it does
Reply:Learning how to skate fast.. is relative as to WHY you want to skate fast. As a former Jr. Olympic Speed Skater and Roller Derby Trainer.. its all relative. Skating fast has all to do with techinque.. body position.. equipment.. etc... A little more information is required to give you a helpful answer.

Roller derby ppl and any roller skate person help?
I tried to check out your choices through your links, but they all just go to the homepage for lowpriceskates.

The R3's are a good starters. I've noticed that girls playing rollerderby that have purchased skates like these end up upgrading in 1-2 years to leather boots, better wheels and bearings. It depends on how serious you are about it. Whether or not you play derby, skating is great exercise!

You can always build your own "package." I prefer leather boots only because they will conform to your feet better and last you longer. I've had my Reidell boots for 20 years now, and they still rock! I also like metal trucks and plates. Yes, plastic is lighter, but I've heard from girls' that through tuff use they will eventually crack. As far as wheels are concerned, if you are playing derby as you know the track is small and tight, so you need a wheel with some grip. Girls on my team have used Hyper Witch Doctors and love them. I've been using Matter D-Rods for the past 2 years, at least twice a week, and they still work great. There is a temptation to buy cheap wheels, but you will find that you'll have to replace them often and you won't get the gripiness you'll need for the tight track. Matter also has new derby wheels that are cheaper that the D-Rods that I'm going to be trying when mine wear out. Bearings? The best bet are Bones Reds...same technology as Swiss but manufactured in China and much cheaper. And, you can transfer the bearing to your new wheels when they wear.

Outdoor wheels I just go for cheap. I've never really experienced a difference, and normally get any ole bearing since performance outside isn't important -- I just like getting fresh air once in awhile!

Also, shop around the net -- I found my wheels at 1/2 the price through one of the oneline stores. And make sure to maintenance them reguarly by rotating the wheels, cleaning you bearings, and oiling them.

See you on the track!

Roller skating?

I have no idea whatsoever how to roller skate, but I'm gonna go to a b-day party at a rollerskating place. (skates aren't inline) Can someone please explain to me how to skate, or at least give a helpful website?

Roller skating?
The skates you are talking about are also called 'quad' skates', and here's an excellent article that I found on the internet (hope it helps!):

"The most important aspect of roller skating is balance. It will take some practice to feel comfortable on your skates, but it's worth remembering two things: (1) you need to distribute your body weight evenly on both feet and over the centre of each foot; and (2) don't bend at the waist in an attempt to "propel" yourself forward. If you bend anywhere, it should only be at the knees. Basically, you want to maintain an erect body position with your centre of gravity squarely over your skates.

If you attempt to stand completely still on your skates when you have both feet pointing forward, you may find that you start to roll forward without even trying. The solution to this - is also the basic starting and stopping position. Basically, this means positioning yourself with one foot forward and the other foot pointed slightly to the side and back so that your feet together form a basic T or V position.

To start skating, lean over the front foot by bending the knee and exerting a little pressure, and push off with the back foot. Coast forward on the front skate and then gradually bring your other foot forward and repeat the movement of exerting pressure on the front foot and pushing off on the back one and then gliding. You should aim for a smooth motion, and that means pushing off strongly to the outside, gliding and then bringing your skate back under your body in a rounded movement. It's a mistake to aim for an absolute poker-straight action. Although your body is moving forward, your legs will sway from side to side somewhat as you shift your body weight from the gliding skate to the pushing skate and back again. It will take some time before you feel the smoothness, but try to concentrate on how you feel and adjust the length of the glide, the intensity of the pushing action and your body-lean if you feel you have a jerking action.

It's almost like cross-country skiing: if you push off too soon, you'll throw yourself off balance; push off too late, and the power you generate is wasted because your centre of gravity is too far ahead of the leg generating the forward push. You will know that the moment of striding is ill timed if you find yourself bending too far forward at the waist and feeling that you are on the verge of hitting the deck nose-first!

Learning to change direction and veer to the left or right is a bit more tricky. But you should practice coasting on one skate and moving your weight from the centre of the skate to the inside or outside wheels depending on whether you want to turn to the right or left.

Now that you are able to move forward, how do you stop? Roller skates are equipped with a large rubber toe-stop under the front of the skate. You can stop by lifting one skate and pointing the toe down and dragging the rubber stop. However, this can be a very jittery step and, particularly on a rough surface, this technique may throw you completely off balance. A more effective way to slow down is to revert to the T position. Coast on your forward skate, lift and turn the other skate to form the T position and drop the inside wheels gradually to the ground to create the drag that slows you down."

Don't forget to have fun--happy rolling!
Reply:sk8lava's answer was good, although long. There are two things that I always tell my beginner students:

1. Keep your head up! Do not look at the floor. Your head will control the way your body moves. If you look at the floor, your feet will go out behind you, because the weight of your head will pull your whole body forward. (Keep your head, shoulders, and hips over your skates.)

2. Keep your knees slightly bent. They act as shock absorbers. You can't keep your balance if you lock your knees! (This goes back to keeping your head, shoulders, and hips over your skates. If your knees are bent, and you stand up straight, your body will be aligned properly.)

You could always check at your rink to see if they offer skating lessons. It might not hurt to take a group lesson, maybe once or twice before the party (if you have time).

Most of all - REMEMBER TO HAVE FUN! That's what it's all about! Good luck!
Reply:Its sorta like walking. Try that, then coasting, then after you do that, GO LIKE A SPEED DEMON!

Where can I go roller skating in the Metro Detroit area---old school songs and older people.?

I used to love to skate. Now I just need some exercise. I thought I would try roller skating again. I would like to skate with older people, maybe then I won't feel so bad about getting back on some skates and probably breaking my neck. LOL I would rather not go to Roller Wheels in Detroit on Schoolcraft---very bad memories there. Thank you for your answers.

Reply:It matters wat kind of music you like and how urban you wanna get but i would recomend riverside rink because i love that rink and ive been there many times and pretty old school....but if your into skating message me and ill show u some stuff cuz i was the best one at riverside when i went Report It

Reply:Northland Skating rink on 8 mile rd. just west of Lahser rd. Thursday nights at 10:30 til 1:30 25 and older session. Old school music is played, its a lot of fun.
Reply:Another place to check out is Skateworld of Troy, it's on 15 Mile Road and Ryan Rd. They have adult skates from 8-10PM on Sunday and Wednesday nights... don't know about the music, but it's a pretty clean, upbeat place.
Reply:Skateland in Westland on Cherry Hill @ Newbergh...but call first, to see when they have open skate. Also there is another place called Skate N Station in Canton. Also in Lincoln Park, there is a place on Southfield between 75 %26amp; Fort Street. I don't know it's name.

Have fun!
Reply:There are still a few rinks around---they are few and far between nowadays. We go Southwest or outside the city. Lincoln Park---Southfield Rd., Woodhaven or Westland----Skateland I went a few months back with my kids, my brother and sister in law---that was tough on old body but much fun.
Reply:They have a roller rink in Waterford, MI. 48327. At M-59 and Pontiac Lake Rd. You can look that up on mapquest.com. Interestingly I remember going to that Schoolcraft place about 45 years ago. They were very strict back then. If you went to fast, or didn't act right, and I mean RIGHT, you were kicked out.
