I saw monkeys on roller skates when I saw the Wizard of Oz live. . . Maybe you saw something like that.
Reply:Return to Oz starring a young Fairuza Baulk. It's supposed to be a sequel, even though Dorothy is too young is this movie for it to be a sequel, but I guess we're not supposed to notice. By the way, Sci Fi is doing a re-make of The Wizard of Oz called Tin Man.

Reply:wasn't it called the Return to Oz? I remember watching it an being frightened out of my skin as a kid! These monkeys had skates and there were other things with really long arms and legs with wheels on the ends. Didn't it have a robot thing in it that kept tick-tocking, a sort of sergeant major thing that had rusted up. Not a patch on the original - of course.

Near as I can tell, you're either referring to "The Wiz" or "Return to Oz." Both are updated versions of the Wizard of Oz.





The Wiz was on Broadway and was also made into a movie starring Diana Ross, Richard Pryor, and Michael Jackson. Return to Oz starred Fairuza Balk as Dorothy and was actually pretty disturbing.





I found a review of a local production that mentions the infamous flying monkeys of the original Wizard of Oz having been replaced by "menacing skaters" in The Wiz. Another site, Wikipedia, explains that, in the movie, the monkeys are actually a motorcycle gang.
