Recoil is noticeable if we throw a heavy ball while standing on roller skates. If instead we go through the?

motions of throwing the ball but hold onto it, our net recoil will be

a) zero.

b) the same as before.

c) small, but noticeable.

10 points to correct answer!

a) Zero
Reply:a) zero.
Reply:well... conservation of momentum would apply meaning

m1v1 = m2v2. since m1 = m2 (ie you didn't drop the ball), v1 =v2 and recoil would not be noticable.

however, you are actually moving the ball against a gravitational field and would do some work on the ball throwing it. in which case you would be converting some potential energy into kinetic energy. which would probably cause you to move a little bit.

so the answer is (a) or (c). I'd go with (a) but knowing that if you try this at home, you will probably move.....
Reply:a) zero. The reason is because you must be transferring momentum to produce motion. Basically you would have to throw something with some mass to get the recoil.
