Will practicing my hockey moves on roller hockey skates help with my moves on the ice?

It definitly can help your puck/stick handling skills although the skating moves are quite a bit different between roller blades and hockey skates. The only real way to get better on your skates is to get on the ice as much as you can.

Will practicing my hockey moves on roller hockey skates help with my moves on the ice?
no. you are female. hockey is a mans sport.
Reply:The carry-over will be limited. Keep in mind, the frictionless surface of the ice is much different than maccadam. Skating on wheels is different than on blades, and I imagine you're wearing less equipment on roller skates than on ice skates. Also, the ball, or street-puck you have, weighs a different amount than a puck. Therefore, you will not benefit your ice hockey skills as much than if you were to practice on the ice.
Reply:Yes,the more you skate with a stick in your hand the more you learn.

And its a great leg workout.

Good luck
Reply:it obviously cant hurt. the more time stickhandling the better, even if your in flip flops
Reply:If it is something you can do on your rollerblades, then you can probably do it in your skates.

Your skating strides are a little different, but spins, rotations, transitions, are pretty much the same mechanics.

Once you master it on wheels, the same fundamental mechanics will still apply.

Your stick work will be slightly different as your rollerblades stand a little taller than you skates, so you'll have to fine tune those coordination drills.

Rollerhockey is pretty much an extension of ice hockey. So all things you do in one, is very similar in the other, with the exception of stopping.

Another odd advantage with rollerblades, you have to pick up your feet more, it helps exaggerate the motion, which when you do it back on the ice, it feels easier.
Reply:Oh yeah.

Any kind of Practice for a sport is good for you.

Finding your way to practice is a very good way to get better.

roller skating and ice skating is pretty similar - both need balance.

Good luck with hockey!
Reply:It will help your skating for sure! But, practicing like special stops and quick turns, not really the two are very different with that, but definitely do tons of stick handling this off season. And, way to go girl!
Reply:Definitely! It keeps you limber during the off season and you can keep improving your stick handling skills and fast foot work.
Reply:Of course. What would it hurt? I taught myself to ice skate based on my inline roller skating ability, so it obviously has a connection. If you're talking about quad roller skates, try inline ones. They're definitely closer to ice skates, and need about the same amount of balancing ability. As far as stickwork, although street hockey balls are much lighter than ice pucks, any kind of stickwork you can do playing roller hockey is great to keep your hands working the way you want.
Reply:not as much as you'd think. Ice and roller are totally different surfaces, and the pucks are completly different. an ice puck in heavier and will stay on your stick better because there is less friction on the ice. Roller pucks are lighter and tend to stick to the surface more. Especially if the runners are worn down. Moreover, rollerblades and ice skates use slightly different muscles in your legs. Ice skates have a smaller surface area and use more of the small stabalizer muscles in your legs. You will also find that your edges are vastly different between ice and roller skates.

All that being said..... It's always a good idea to practice. whether or not it's on ice or on a parking lot. Keep it up.
